what does mes stand for.jpg

Historically MES was referred to as Metro Evangelical Services/Metro Evangeliese Sorg. Currently MES is just trading as MES. The strapline Mould Empower and Serve is used to illustrate the services that MES offers.

54
when did mes begin.jpg

MES started as a feeding programme in 1986 who handed out food parcels to the homeless and unemployed community of Hillbrow. In 1989 the project achieved Section 21 status with a Board of Directors. The organisation was started to address the pressing needs of the poor in the inner city of Johannesburg. Especially addressing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of the homeless and unemployed, challenging individuals to take responsibility for their lives and become sustainable. At the end of 2007 the CMR (Christian Social Council) of Johannesburg merged with MES. This means that the capacity for social services that MES provides increased dramatically. In 2008 MES embarked on duplicating its services to Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and recently to Kempton Park.

Is it safe to visit MES.jpg

JOHANNESBURG

Of course it is! Weekly, many corporate supporters come into the heart of the city to see the amazing the work we do. For peace of mind, MES staff who are primarily locals, escort our tour groups and add to the colour of the city tours. Monthly Tours are organised and twice a year an Open Day Tour is organised on a Saturday. Bookings for these events can be done with kevin@mes.org.za

On Thursday Nights volunteers are welcome to join us for our evening Outreaches. where we  hit the streets and hand out blankets, bread and soup to the homeless and destitute in our city of gold. This usually starts at 19h00 and ends at 21h30 - a highly recommended hands-on look into at challenges of the inner city.

From time to time we organise week-end outreaches for youth groups or other groups on request. The utmost precautions are taken to ensure the safety of staff and visitors at all times. While we cannot guarantee the safety of anyone, we have never had a violent or crime related incident while giving a tour in MES's long history.

CAPE TOWN

Bookings for tours of the area serviced by MES CT could be done with karin@mes.org.za

Bi-weekly outreaches to the women trapped in prostitution as well as the men involved in the business are hosted by MES CT. Every last Friday of the month (as well as ad hoc) outreaches to the homeless community are a great witnessing to all. Volunteers interested in joining in these outreaches will receive basic training in advance.

MES CT has been blessed with a clear record of no incidents since the first outreach. Although safety during these outreaches can never be guaranteed, the utmost is done to caution against it e.g. the SAPS operation room is notified before each outreach.

PORT ELIZABETH

PE has outreaches every Tuesday and Thursday.

KEMPTON PARK

Not at present scheduled - can be arranged by appointment
