Our People
I always had a passion to work with vulnerable and needy people while I was ministering in a congregation for a number of years. When I was approached to join MES, I knew that this would be the opportunity to invest as Christian believer in those people’s lives and help through practical support to change their lives.
The opportunity also arises daily to show by example to many churches and communities how we can practically contribute to bring change in our cities
I came to MES in 1996 after completing my B.Com studies at RAU as a service year volunteer. The realisation in that first year that I can use my talents, specific training and background to change people’s lives was probably the most powerful personal revelation I gained at MES. Knowing that God can use me as I am still baffles my mind.
Besides my responsibilities overseeing the finances of MES I see myself as the person asking critical questions about the way things are done. For me there is no better satisfaction than to find a better, faster, simpler way in dealing with sometimes tremendously complex societal problems. Challenging people to see God potential for themselves and their community is something that motivates me personally.
My personal motto is to be the change you want to see in the world.
There is a moral vacuum at the hearts of individuals MES is working with. There is a spiritual hunger in the hearts of the community, and this hunger remains unsatisfied. So God called me to be His ambassador in the city to address those issues and on how to have an influence for good in the community. How can I contribute to 'Changing the Heart of the city: Love and Serve humanity: by helping homeless on 'How to Find Life' and how to Live and Act with Integrity' through Biblical teachings.
Why I Work at MES and how I contribute to “changing the heart of the city?”
I am a qualified social worker and have over 22 years of experience. Most of my work experience has been in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal before I relocate to Gauteng for the second time, 3 years ago. I have always worked for NGOs and have a passion for developmental work and working with marginalized individuals. I thought long and hard before accepting the post at MES just over 18 months ago as I had a choice between a lecturing post at a local University and my current post. I’m glad I chose MES because working at MES is more than a job, it is a calling…and advocating and ensuring services for our clients, striving to uphold the values MES and make a difference is how I contribute to “change the heart of the city”.
I started working at Mes in October 2009 and I believe I was placed at MES to help in making a difference in the lives of the people in the city. It is also a privilege to be part of an Organization that stands for love, change and friendship. My position allows me to make sure all the service units have the necessary support on maintenance, logistics, food and security and allow the service units to concentrate on serving our clients. We also give the homeless the opportunity to apply their trade by assisting us in renovation work and community work and with that they feel like belonging again and that they also play a part in changing the hart of the city.
I joined MES 17 years ago as a young social worker fresh from university. The plan was to work for MES for only one year. Evidently that plan did not materialise. I am still working at MES because I belief God has a purpose with me within MES and He wants to use me as an instrument to be part of the change needed in society. I contribute to the vision of MES by ensuring sufficient resources are in place to enable us to reach our goals. Of course this is a daily challenge. I have a burning heart for the less fortunate in our society and I would like to contribute to “changing the outstretched hand to a hand that creates something useful and sustainable”.
I joined MES three years ago after 14 years in the South African Police Service. As a cop I dealt with policing strategies in order to stabilize any society. Gal 2:20 says: “It is not I that live anymore, but Christ that lives in me.” This is the core of what I believe can change any heart! Be it the heart of business, state or even the church! It changed me. It helped me to truly love God, to love myself and to be able to love other people. At MES Cape Town we strive to make the “Christ in me”, practical - to live the change. The team shares their own journeys with those that still struggle in order to encourage change and also to learn from each other. There is always hope that change can happen and we have the Hope that does not disappoint!! How can we not share that?
Working at MES with the destitute and needy people is a great privilege. The mere fact that I can make a difference in somebody’s life makes me “tick”. Money cannot buy or replace the thank you and gratitude that you receive from somebody that was helped.
It is not easy; many days I feel like running away but with His unlimited grace, I continue.I became a MES family member on 1 September 2008.
